Chamber Electronica EP1 for Vocal and Violin samples.
My intention when producing this EP was to compose five pieces of music that would use the same set of instruments throughout, in the same way that classical chamber music is scored. The EP's title is rather tongue in cheek, but it describes the concept.
I spent several days recording vocal and violin sounds, then editing and manipulating the wave files ready for writing. The percussion and synthizer parts also use the same basic set of sounds throughout the EP. Each piece of music explores the possibility in these sounds differently. The EP works as a whole, with each track flowing into the next.
I chose vowel sounds (for the vocals) because they have the most interesting harmonics. It has been esoteric teaching for thousands of years that certain sounds, in particular vowels, resonate with the energy centres of the human body, clearing blocked energy.
Almost every pitch or tone of the violin in this music uses a different sample to create an authentic timbre. With this mix of electro-acoustic sounds I hoped to create electronic music that is organic, with a human touch.
1a. The first track is for winding down and reconnecting with the earth. A dub centred track which allows the clean string chords and vocal samples to explore the harmonic scale.
2u. Long softly distorted vocal chords which start and end this piece are aimed at the emotional energy centre, in the pit of the stomach. The music moves from dark to light as a violin improvisation takes flight over drum and bass beats.
3o. Connecting heart and mind, this piece uses an alternative take on the Hip-Hop sound. Moving through 4 beat then 3 beat loops, before settling on a 7 beat loop to end.
4e. Gentle sounds representing communication. The fractured, lilting percussion create an effect like running water whilst the violin chords roll back and forth like a sea-shanty.
5i. The final piece uses simple chords, delicate string and vocal melodies, building to a warmly distorted wall of sound. An electro-acoustic mantra.
