Review of B-Boy Funk by Blunked

    By remote viewer | September 5, 2008

    Breaking The Joint Up

And this is how to do it. At once both disjointed and fluid with a spaced out feel that lends an air of expectancy to the proceedings. You know in art they tell you to draw the spaces between objects, well that’s what you do here also - listen to the spaces between the sounds. They are what make this track special. An electric piano is caught in a revolving door while the funky drummer gets wicked. Some may find this a difficult sound, but it’s a difficulty worth bearing, stick with it, the rewards are one banging tune that’s going to stand out from the rest. In an ocean of conformity B-Boy Funk is an island of cranked up, laid back individuality.

Artist of the weel - Hristian Stojanowski

    By BeatsTom | September 5, 2008

Although born in Skopje (Macadonia) in 1987 Hristian Stojanowski has been living in Serbia for the last 17 years of his life. Like many a ten year old, he collected as many tapes as possible and literally played them to death, as an early love of electronic music had dug it’s roots and was growing.
At this time he was mostly playing big name groups and artists such as The Prodigy, Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin among others (and what a fine place to start!).
After a while of learning and gaining a better understanding of dance music, Hristian had decided he wanted to be involved and that he wanted his sound techno-esq - touches of the then London vibes - with some club trance influence. It wasn’t long before he and his friends started skipping school only to be found in the local record store honing their mixing skills.
Finally at the age of 17, he started djing out-and-about and was actively beginning his own production work. Since then his sound has evolved and he has become known for his funkalisious techno grooves - both in his sets as a dj and in the studio.
Keep on Techno Records have put out his “Few Times For You EP” this week - and rightly so, this is fantastically groovy techno! Check it out!

Label of the week - USB Digital

    By BeatsTom | September 5, 2008

USB Digital is the digital version of U.S.B, the first Bulgarian label releasing tunes internationally. Interest in the label has been growing internationally since their foundation in April 2007.
USB Digital is not a label concentrating only on in-house artists, they want to give a chance to artists from Bulgaria and the region to be heard and to present their sound and their vision about the future of music.
As a result USB Digital is releasing every week, presenting everything that’s fresh and new. They haven’t focused on a particular style, their philosophy is “there are only two styles of music - good music and bad music.” USB Digital is selecting only the best electronic sound! In conclusion - just stay in touch with this label and see what comes next…
This weeks floor shaking release comes more than highly recommended, that is if you like your underground tech house. “Totally Wasted EP” is the fine work DJ Lion & Zon - and we think it proves that this is not the last time you’ll be tuning in to USB!

Label of the week - U-Phonic Records

    By BeatsTom | August 28, 2008

New York’s unruly club label U-Phonic Records was founded in 2001 by seasoned dance artist, writer and producer Darrell Martin. Martin’s recordings have been remixed by world famous club DJ/Producers Raul Rincon, Robbie Rivera, The Jinks, Hard Attack, Funky Junction, Guy Robin, John Rizzo, Greg Cohen, Frankie C (our resident DJ) and Tedd Patterson to name a few. His chart-topping dance hits go back to the early 1990s, releasing several hot singles as an artist with Tommy Boy Records. Most recently, Martin wrote and produced 2005’s Top 10 dance hits “Workout” and “Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous” by RuPaul.
U-Phonic Records continuing mission is to bring new, quality dance/house music to the world through all mediums. In addition to working with a variety of established dance artists, U-Phonic is dedicated to identifying new and emerging talent in its effort to introduce tomorrow’s dance music stars to the world.
This week see the release of “Mindbuster” courtesy of Jocelyn Brown & Oliver Cheatham which comes with ten soulful funky club mixes from which to choose from… They’re all good, but heavily doing the rounds on the BD stereo is the Maurizio Verbini & CBS Feeling Remix.

    By BeatsTom | August 21, 2008

23 year old Kent based dj and producer Tim Green, has some of the sickest production skills on the planet today. These skills are about to shine through on a series of high profile releases which will catapault his profile into the upper echelons of the underground dance music community.
Already being championed by the likes of Richie Hawtin, Josh Wink, Carl Cox, Claude Von Stroke, Luciano, Laurent Garnier, Annie Mac, Locodice and its not hard to see why 2008 will be the year Tim Green makes that all important step up!
Tims musical tastes range from Folk to Jazz, Rock to D&B, and from downtempo through to blistering hard techno, although until now he was best known for his minimal techno/electronic house music hybrid under the production monika TG! Tim has released singles under the name TG over the past 18 months for labels such as FourTwenty, Infant & Fling, whilst being remixed by the likes of Martin Buttrich, Jamie Jones & Konrad Black. His studio time has also seen him remixing such luminaries as Lee Burridge, Koma & Bones, Luke Dzierzek, Future Loop Foundation and many more.
So in just under 2 years, Tim has gone from nobody, to working with the biggest djs and labels on the planet, and we haven’t even mentioned his djing yet! Fusing live djing with CDjs and laptop mixing on Ableton Live, a TG performance is unforgettable, which has led to some very high profile gigs for Fabric, Retox, The Egg, Turnmills & Herbal in the UK, as well as numerous gigs across the world….
And where better place to check him out than TG’s new release on Trapez - “Mr Dry” - this 2 track bonkers tech house corker is a must have! Check it!

Label of the week - Armada Music

    By BeatsTom | August 21, 2008

Five years ago, Armin Van Buuren, Maykel Piron and David Lewis created a label called Armada. No-one knew back then what the label would become and what a galaxy of international talent it would soon represent. Working with the most talented producers and labels in the world, Armada has developed its own sound and a fan base that stretches to the four corners of the globe.
Amsterdam-based Armada does more than just release music however, they focus on management, publishing and events as well. The approach to combining everything music related in one company has attracted several top names to the label such as; Markus Schulz, Remy, M.I.K.E., Mischa Daniels, Nick K and StoneBridge who are all responsible for the A&R activities of their own labels within Armada, whilst Armin himself deals with A&R activities for the Armada labels: Armind and A State Of Trance.
Armada Music currently has 19 different sub-labels representing every type of music from Trance to House. As managing director, Maykel Piron quotes: “It’s mainly important to be able to release high quality music. That basically means we should be able to release every genre of track no matter if it’s Trance or House, if we love it, then we have the opportunity to release it.”
There’s a plethora of releases out this week on Armada - head to the label profile and trance yourself silly!

Artist of the week - Danny Byrd

    By BeatsTom | August 15, 2008

Hailing from the South West of England, Danny Byrd has been involved in the D&B scene since the late 90’s.
Seen as a pioneer of soulful and vocal liquid funk, Danny had his first release on DJ Ron’s Piccasso imprint back in 1998 with “Manhattan”, quickly moving on to join up with the Hospital Records camp in the year 2000.
It was with Hospital that he really made his mark with the singles “Do it Again” and “Changes” - this was the start of a fresh new sound mixing D&B with soulful house, garage and R&B influences.
Later in the year he also skillfully remixed London Elektricty’s “Wishing Well” for the Plastic Surgery 2 compilation. The remix again took d&b to new heights with Todd Edwards style vocal chopping and was a firm favorite with liquid funk don Fabio. Other notable remixes were for High Contrast’s “Music is Everything” also on Hospital and Tungsten and Morph’s “Expand your Mind” on the Sound In Motion label.
During 02 Mr Byrd concentrated his efforts on working outside of D&B on Garage/Breaks and producing R&B beats, but returned on Hospital in 03 and 04 on the Weapons of Mass Creation Compilations with “Planet Music” feat MC Foxy and “The Winchester Club”. 2005 brought an album deal to the table from Hospital, and saw the release of “Soul Function” and “Doghill” to great reviews and support from Annie Mac, Bailey, Bryan G, High Contrast, and many more.
Part of the new record deal allowed Danny to work with a select few top labels outside of Hospital, and in 06 he had releases on V Recordings, Spearhead Records amd Total Science’s Advanced imprint.
May saw the release of his long awaited debut LP “Supersized” which showcases not only his meticulous attention to detail and technical acumen, but also a level of versatility and musical inspiration unmatched in drum & bass… His new EP ‘From Bath With Love’ is out now on Hospital.
